Introducing Alex Blakey

Kirkham Treasures is a partnership between the Cultural Consortium, Historic England and selected artist. The project aims to reenergise the high street and reconnect the community with Kirkham’s heritage.

As the selected artist for the Kirkham Hidden Treasures Commission, I am excited to introduce a new 4 month long programme of community arts engagement leading up to the instalment of a new temporary arts installation for the town centre.

My work as an artist has led me to become involved in a wide variety of arts projects from running arts for wellbeing sessions and creative consultations to delivering large public art projects throughout the UK. As an artist, I specialise in fused and kiln formed glass work but regularly diversify into other materials ranging from wood to concrete, pewter, willow, paper and steel. My work draws inspiration from history, memories and nature. I am passionate about preserving our heritage and utilising art to recreate glimpses into the past.

Throughout the programme there will be opportunities for residents of all ages to take part in a range wide variety of workshops and activities from sharing memories to creating glasswork and other elements for the final installation. I will be working with local schools, community groups and individuals to explore the fascinating history of Kirkham and design the final installation.

For your chance to become involved in this exciting new project, please keep an eye on the blog for upcoming opportunities.
