12 Days Of Kirkham - 2 Fish Stones Shining

This artwork is located at Candie Bar on Poulton Street.

Kirkham Market Square & Fish Stones

The second of twelve days of Kirkham draws its inspiration from a well-known feature of the town centre; the fish stones.

The fish stones we know today are of early Nineteenth Century construction, with the lamp added in the 1870s at the expense of local mill owner and businessman Thomas Langton Birley. It is likely that these current stones replaced an earlier set as Kirkham’s market square has been in almost continuous use since the granting of the first market charter in the Thirteenth Century.

The Twentieth Century saw the controversial removal of the lamp and an increased risk of damage to the stones by cars, but common sense eventually prevailed and the lamp was replaced in 1982, leaving the market square as we find it today.

“The Candie Bar is proud and privileged to be involved with the 12 Days of Kirkham, we had the lovely Gaenor Hall create our amazing window, designed to celebrate the two iconic Fish Stones.

This is a great community event, and we hope that everyone enjoys walking around the town and looking at all the amazing artwork while finding out about the local heritage”.
