12 Days Of Kirkham - 5 Roman Coins
This artwork is located at Kirkham Optical Centre on the corner of Church Street and Preston Street.
Roman Coins In Kirkham
Whilst there had been limited use of coinage in Britain in the Iron Age period, it was the Romans who introduced it on a large scale and like most Roman settlements around Britain, Kirkham has its fair share of Roman coin finds.
The Portable Antiquities Scheme website has two Roman coin finds listed for Kirkham, a silver denarius of Trajan dating from 103AD to 111AD and a Dupondius of Antoninus Pius. Besides these two coins there is also at least a third held by the archive at St Michael’s Church and there are likely more found by private individuals.
Recently during a feasibility study for a future project, the Kirkham Treasures team were lucky enough to find a Roman coin themselves, a denarius of Nero from 64AD, undoubtedly one of the earliest coins from the Kirkham area.
“The Twelve Days of Kirkham is a great project, that celebrates the town’s heritage. The artwork around the town is amazing and has a great visual impact.
Katie’s illustration of the 5 Roman coins makes the heritage more accessible.
I am delighted to be part of this project and hope that many visit to enjoy the artwork and explore what Kirkham high street has to offer.”
